We want everyone to have a good experience at Quantum Martial Arts. You are going to notice a warm community of people who are there to learn and grow. You will be asked to remove your shoes at the door as we pride ourselves on a clean dojo space. You will get an opportunity to get a quick tour of the space with one of our instructors or a volunteer. Once you are comfortable we will have you come out on to the mat and we will begin with 30-45 minutes of body opening stretching and martial arts conditioning. We will do some breath work and end the warm up with a brief meditation. The second half of the class depending on the day, will be a martial arts class where you will be learning and applying some techniques with partners and on the open mat. You can expect to get some one-on-one time with one of our instructors.

No. Sparring is introduced gradually and only when students are ready. Beginners spend time learning the fundamentals before participating in controlled sparring, and student safety is always our top priority. If you have questions or concerns, our instructors are happy to work with you.

Quantum is a multidisciplinary style created by Master Rachael Evans during the early 1990’s, drawing inspiration from various disciplines to create something unique. One hallmark of the Quantum style is the endeavor to expose the martial arts practitioner to many different ways of thinking. Master Evans has been pursuing her martial arts training for over thirty-five years, and Quantum Martial Arts reflects that rigorous pursuit. Quantum is a blend of hard and soft styles, a study of straight lines and circles, and explores the use of boxing as well as grappling.
The beginner levels of White and Yellow Belt will cover foundational kicks, blocks, and strikes, and study basic stances and optimal posture while learning long-distance range fighting techniques. The framework of the style has its roots in Tae Kwon Do, which is known for its explosive energy. Our sense of movement, however, comes from Kung Fu styles such as Tai Chi and Wing Chun, where the focus is on smooth and subtle movement. Concepts of redirecting energy and conservation of motion are taken from Aikido. The stretching and calisthenics we do are influenced by Master Evans’ experience with yoga and the U.S. Marine Corps boot camp.
At the intermediate level of Green and Blue Belt, close-range concepts and techniques are incorporated into the curriculum. The inside trapping exercises we use blend the concepts of Chi Sau (“sticky hands”) from Wing Chun and “pushing hands” from Tai Chi. The ground fighting and grappling techniques we study are taken from Judo (“the gentle way” a Japanese system of throwing and falling), Jiu-jitsu, and Hapkido (a Korean system of grappling or wrestling).
Although difficult to pin down, the Quantum spirit that moves through our blended tradition is strong and distinct. We are known for the intensity of our training, for our sense of humor, our community spirit, and for our focus on whole-body health and each individual’s journey through the martial arts.
