Our Instructors
Brad Lyons serves as Chief Instructor at Quantum Martial Arts Portland. He believes martial arts is about far more than learning to kick, punch, or defend yourself. Martial arts is a lifelong practice of becoming a better human being. It teaches us to show up consistently, quiet the mind, challenge ourselves, and continue discovering who we are becoming.
Brad's martial arts journey began as a child in Indianapolis, where he trained alongside his father for nearly ten years and earned his First Dan Black Belt under Master Ryong Hwang. After more than twenty years away from martial arts, he returned to training in 2012 at Quantum Martial Arts San Francisco under founder Master Rachael Evans. In 2020, Brad founded Quantum Martial Arts Portland to help create a place where people of all ages could train, connect, and grow together.
Today, Brad holds the rank of Second Degree Black Belt and approaches martial arts with the mindset of a lifelong student. He believes the dojo should be a beautiful, welcoming, and nonjudgmental space where people feel safe to be curious, test their limits, make mistakes, laugh at themselves, and grow.
Outside the dojo, Brad leads a family owned industrial distribution and service organization across the western United States. He has found that great leadership and martial arts share many of the same principles: invest in people, lead with humility, keep learning, and help others discover what they are capable of.
His hope is simple: that everyone who walks through Quantum's doors leaves stronger, more confident, and a little more connected to who they are becoming.
Master Rachael Evans is the founder and chief instructor at Quantum Martial Arts, with over 35 years of martial arts experience. A sixth-degree black belt, she teaches a unique style of her own creation that blends Tae Kwon Do, Wing Chun, Judo, and Arnis, among other styles, in a challenging and positive learning environment. Master Evans resides in San Francisco but regularly travels to our other schools to work with our instructors and students.
Inspired by Bruce Lee’s performance in the movie Enter the Dragon, Master Evans first studied Shito-ryu as a youth. Martial arts has been a constant in her life, through a journey that includes management, music, bookkeeping, and the U.S. Marine Corps. She took her first Tae Kwon Do class from Master Mark Karasek in Twentynine Palms, CA, and studied under him for five years before returning to Seattle to teach.
Master Evans opened Quantum Martial Arts on Capitol Hill in Seattle in March of 1995 with just 8 students and 8,000 square feet of space. Since then, the school has grown to well over 100 students and moved to its current larger location in First Hill, Seattle.
Master Evans moved to San Francisco and opened a second Quantum Martial Arts dojo in the Mission District in 2007. The school has since grown from a handful of Seattle transplants to a thriving program for all ages that continues to expand. The Quantum style continues to develop as well, as her experience with yoga, body work, and healing arts deepens.
